Niveus shares official details on Media Center Extender - EDGE

Technically, Niveus was the first of the major partners to spill the proverbial beans on its Extender for Windows Media Center, and while it was sitting around for all to see at CEDIA, details were admittedly slim. Now, however, the firm has come clean and doled out the specs for its Media Center Extender - EDGE, following the moves made by Linksys and D-Link earlier. The EDGE boasts a "Glacier Passive Cooling for near silent operation," RS-232 / IP / IR for third-party control support, a trio of USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet jack, HDMI / component outputs and two-channel analog / digital optical audio outs. Unfortunately, Niveus' box doesn't include integrated WiFi, so its wired or nothin' here, and while we'd love to know how much this thing will actually cost, we do know it'll land sometime in November. What I want to know is why I would buy any of these new extenders instead of an XBOX 360 Core with HDMI and a remote?

I'm pretty sure the selling point on all these units is the fact that they are almost Silent, passively cooled (plus using less power to boot since it doesn't have a high-end GPU/multicore CPU/etc.), and they probably boot up right into media center extender with little fanfare. I remember the original Xbox media extender, there was nothing more annoying than watching the stupid green Xbox opening animation every time I wanted to watch a show. At least the 360 is a bit more classy. RS-232 controller for system automation is also very cool if you have one of those pimped out custom configurations where a Logitech Harmony just doesn't cut it, and I'll bet they make a 19" rack mount bracket set for this so you can integrate it into your AV closet. Obviously not for average folks.

I can garauntee this will be one of the most expensive extenders on the market. I know the 360 isn't the speediest extender in the world but a little patience never hurt anyone plus it will save some bucks. It's just when you add the main computer plus the cable card add-on and now this! Ouch that's some big bucks. But it sure does look cool.

I know it's hard to believe, but wireless does not actually exclude the presence of wires in said device. Pfah, wireless .. Lies !
